Hermitage of Saint Quirze and Julitta
The Orthodox Church in Lloret de Mar is linked to the Patriarchate of Moscow and the Diocese of Madrid and Lisbon, and the community has been holding religious services at the Hermitage of Sant Quirze since mid-2011, one of the oldest buildings in the town, included in the Inventory of Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. Although the current hermitage officially dates from the 11th century, there is archaeological evidence indicating the presence of a Christian place of worship as early as the 6th to 9th centuries, including fragments of Roman pottery, coins from the time of Constantine and burials that could correspond to a martyrium, a funerary monument dedicated to Christian martyrs.
Historically, the Orthodox Church is regarded as the continuation of early Christianity and the apostolic message, and it separated from the Catholic Church during the Eastern Schism (1054), due to differences over papal jurisdiction and minor cultural and theological issues. The global Orthodox community is composed of patriarchates and autocephalous churches, each headed by a patriarch, with the Patriarch of Constantinople holding honorary primacy.
The Orthodox liturgy is mystical and solemn, with long prayers, chanting, the use of incense and a strong presence of iconography, especially of the Mother of God and the saints.
The sacraments, such as baptism by full immersion, and practices such as weekly fasting and abstinence, as well as special days throughout the year, are fundamental to spiritual life. The celebrations combine rites, music and recitations that connect the community with the traditions of the early Christians.
The hermitage is dedicated to the holy martyrs Cyric and Julitta, mother and son who died in the 4th century for maintaining their faith. Their story of faithfulness and courage is a model of devotion and a point of cohesion for the local Orthodox community, which commemorates them in liturgical celebrations.
The Orthodox faithful of Lloret come mainly from Eastern Europe and other areas with an Orthodox tradition, and the celebrations are held in Russian, Greek, Romanian and Spanish, depending on the attendees' origins. Furthermore, the hermitage welcomes Russian-speaking tourists during the summer season, ensuring the continuity of the rituals and the transmission of the faith.
The Hermitage of Sant Quirze is a historic, religious and cultural space where Orthodox liturgical traditions, devotion to the saints, and the connection with local Christian history are preserved. Its presence in Lloret de Mar testifies to the continuity of Eastern Christianity, the protection of architectural heritage, and the importance of faith in the life of the community.
