Breda

Pottery and ceramics tradition

Breda is a small municipality located in the eastern parts of Montseny, in the Selva region.

The characteristic element of this locality is ceramics. Since the 15th century, Breda pottery has been an icon of its long artisanal tradition. The town is the most important center of reference and production of ceramics in Catalonia and Spain.

In Breda, the mausoleums, the monastery of Sant Salvador, the old town and the Josep Aragay museum also stand out.

Breda has traditionally been the paradise of "pots" to constitute the Spanish potter's focus with the largest production of pots and pans for the fire, as documented by the 144 potters listed in the 18th century, and that even in 1982 there were still 1982 workshops and a cooperative of ceramists created in the 1970s, with exports to countries such as France, Holland or Denmark, in addition to supplying ceramic paste to a large part of the Spanish market, despite the competition that was brought about by the development of other important national pottery centers .
