Girona and fortified towns

Hostalric Walled village
With a length of 600 meters, there is the walled enclosure, dating from the 15th century.
At the top of the town, the parish church of Santa Maria attracts attention. Although it is built on top of an earlier Romanesque building, the church is Gothic in style and was renovated after suffering serious damage during the French War.

The walled enclosure was built during the 14th century and redone in the 18th, it follows the route of the old Ral road, from Girona to Barcelona.
It was built with gray basaltic stone taken from the castle hill. It has a length of about 600 meters and an average height of 10m. It consisted of four entrance portals: the Barcelona portal, demolished at the beginning of the 20th century and rebuilt in 1969; the one in Girona, located at the entrance to Carrer Major; that of the Ollers, located at the far end of Carrer del Forn; and that of Vinyes, in the railway corridor.
Where each section of wall is defended with battlements and flanked by semi-cylindrical or cylindrical towers, of different heights, up to a total of 8, not counting the towers of the Friars and the Convent, located outside the walls.
The names of the towers are, following the order from top to bottom: torre del portal de Barcelona, Ararà (the most notable), Tuies Negra, Caís, Bailina, Arenes (names from the houses to which they are attached), Cabrera (adjacent to the old medieval hospital of the Viscounts of the same name) and the one in Plaça dels Bous.
